The Problem is We Focus on the Problem: Shifting Our Attention to Solutions in Business

Did you know that humans naturally focus on problems rather than solutions? Focusing on the issue or negative thoughts is a common trait that can hinder progress and innovation, especially in business.

In my book The Small Business BIG EXIT, I explain that “our brains will process over 60,000 thoughts a day. Unfortunately, 80% of those thoughts are negative. That needs to change. One way to change this is to become more mindful of your thoughts. Instead of letting your mind wander, please focus on the present moment and observe your thoughts as they come.  When a negative thought arises, acknowledge it, then try to replace it with a positive thought or action to help you move forward.”

So, what if I told you that by shifting our attention from the problem to the solution, we can unlock a world of possibilities and propel ourselves and our businesses forward? This blog  post will explore why focusing on the issue holds us back and how we can cultivate a solution-oriented mindset. Get ready to challenge your perspective and unleash your business’s true potential!

Surprising Fact:

Did you know that the average person spends about 80% of their time and energy on problems and only 20% on solutions? This staggering statistic highlights our natural inclination to dwell on the negatives. But what if we flipped the script and focused more on solutions? How would that impact our businesses?

Thought-Provoking Question:

Have you ever considered that the key to business success lies not in dwelling on the problem but in actively seeking and implementing solutions? This shift in perspective can empower you to take control of your business’s trajectory and lead it towards success.

1. Acknowledge the Problem:

Before we can shift our focus to solutions, we must first acknowledge the problem at hand. Understanding the root cause, its impact on your business, and the potential risks is essential. This step is crucial as it reassures you that you are on the right path to solving the problem. However, dwelling on the problem for too long can lead to paralysis, hindering progress. Once you clearly understand the problem, it’s time to shift your attention towards finding a solution.

2. Reframe the Problem as an Opportunity:

Instead of viewing the problem as a roadblock, reframe it as an opportunity for growth and improvement. Every problem presents a chance to innovate, learn, and evolve. By reframing the problem, you can shift your mindset from a fixed mindset to a growth mindset, where challenges become stepping stones towards success.

3. Define Clear Goals:

To effectively focus on solutions, it’s crucial to define clear goals. What do you want to achieve? What outcome are you aiming for? By setting specific and measurable goals, you create a roadmap that guides your solution-seeking efforts. This clarity empowers you to take targeted actions and make informed decisions to overcome the problem.

4. Foster a Solution-Oriented Culture:

Creating a solution-oriented culture within your business is essential for long-term success. Encourage your team to think creatively and approach challenges with a solutions-focused mindset. Foster an environment where brainstorming and collaboration are encouraged. By fostering a solution-oriented culture, you create a supportive ecosystem where everyone is aligned toward finding and implementing solutions.

5. Take Action:

Identifying solutions is the first step; taking action is where progress happens. Break down the solutions into actionable steps and prioritize them based on their potential impact. Encourage experimentation, learning from failures, and iterating on the solutions. Consistent action can turn your focus into tangible results and positive change.

Shifting our attention from the problem to the solution is a mindset shift that can revolutionize how we approach challenges in business. We can unlock our business’s true potential by acknowledging the problem, reframing it as an opportunity, defining clear goals, fostering a solution-oriented culture, and taking action. So, are you ready to break free from the problem-focused mindset and embrace the power of solutions? Remember, the problem is not the end; it’s the starting point for innovation and growth. Focus on solutions, and watch your business thrive and flourish in ways you never imagined possible.
